What to Expect

How long are our services?

All services are under an hour in length.

What do people wear?

You will see a wide range of dress at all services, though dress tends to be more casual at the Contemporary service.

Where should I park?

The church has a parking lot in the rear of the building and there are many on street spaces available. We have several designated spaces as handicapped parking. From the parking lot, you may enter the rear doors of the building and it is easiest to enter the building through the side entrance where there is an elevator to the sanctuary level or to the basement level where our social room is located.

Where should I sit?

You may sit anywhere you wish in the sanctuary. Ask an usher if you need assistance.

Is the building handicapped accessible?

Yes. We have an elevator on the east side entrance to take you to all levels.

Can we bring children to worship?

Absolutely! Children are welcome in worship. During the service children up through the 5th grade are dismissed to children’s church after a brief children’s message.

Do I have to believe in a certain Creed to attend worship?

No. Anyone wanting to worship the Lord or learn about Christian faith is welcome to attend!

Do I have to say anything during the service?

No. You won’t be singled out in any way.

What style of Worship Music is featured at the typical worship service?

Worship is the foundation of our life together and music is an integral part of our worship. Because we believe that worship is active rather than passive, music at GPC supports the congregational singing in order to engage rather than entertain.

Our instrumentalists and vocalists serve our congregation by adding warmth and richness to our singing, seeking to point us toward the multi-faceted glory of the Triune God. To this end, we will use a broad spectrum of instruments and genres to avoid romanticizing any stage in music history, whether past or present. Here you will find ancient tunes that the Christian community has been singing for thousands of years, hymns from our own tradition (the Protestant Reformation) and new music that is being written by our own talented musicians.

Our music director, Dr. J. Frederick Davison, uses a variety of music styles from classical to gospel to standard hymns and original pieces in our worship. We have a very fine pipe organ and Dr. Davison will very often bring in skilled musician to augment our music program. While we do not feature a praise band as such, praise music is often a part of our worship.

What are your customs regarding Holy Communion?

Anyone who professes faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is welcome to participate in the Lord’s Supper. In our traditional services, people are usually served the bread and juice in their seats. All are welcome but no one is required to participate.

Do you take up offerings at your services, and if so, how much should I give?

We do receive an offering each Sunday, an opportunity to give to God’s work in gratitude for all that God has done for us. Offerings support the work of our church, local community assistance, and international missionaries and projects. The amount you give is between you and the Lord. Since the pandemic, we leave a basket at the front entrance and offering plates in the back of the church for you.

How do I find out more about the church?

You will find brochures in the pews and there are members more than willing to share about the life and ministry of our church. Also, you may schedule time with our pastor to enquire further. Just call the Church office to schedule a time with our pastor. (717-597-8333)

If I desire to join, how do I do that?

We offer an “Exploring Membership” class at certain times of the year which offers a comprehensive introduction to the church and the Presbyterian way of discipleship to Jesus Christ. Following the class, you may join if you wish to.

Do you offer online worship options?

Yes! We use our YouTube channel: Greencastle Presbyterian Church, PA to broadcast live at 10 am each Sunday. Services are recorded and made available online. We have an extensive library of services from the past three years available on our YouTube channel.

If I am an online attender, how may I join as a member of the Greencastle Presbyterian Church?

This is new territory for us. Presently we are in dialogue with the Church Session to discern a way to make this option available to our online regulars.

We always have a Fellowship Hour after services.

We meet after our Sunday morning worship in the Social room with coffee, tea, snacks etc. and you are cordially invited to join us. We feel a part of our calling as followers of Jesus is to create space and time to welcome all and to develop meaningful friendships together.
